Painting on vellum is a very rewarding and challenging experience for Sarah as an artist.
It is great to keep a tradition alive.
Watercolour painted on vellum has a particular luminosity. The paint itself sits on the surface, rather than soaks in and particular painting techniques are used with a very fine brush.
Historically, vellum has been used for important documents since the 5th century BC, due to its archival properties.
Artists that use vellum will often have a great respect for it, due it being part of our heritage, but also because it comes from a living creature and each piece is completely individual.
